Minneapolis — Minnesota National Guard Gabe Kalscheur announced on Saturday that he would move to Iowa for his senior season, the first of several expected departures from Gophers following a coaching change.
Calshu said on Twitter He was thrilled with the “next chapter and new start” of his college career at Cyclone.
Kalscheur, 6 feet 4, 200 pounds, is from Minnesota, hired by his then assistant, new Gophers coach Ben Johnson. Calcheu also played at De La Salle High School under the director Dave Sawson, who had just been hired as an assistant to Johnson’s staff.
Johnson replaced Richard Pitino, who was fired eight seasons later. Calche was the only NCAA tournament-winning star in Minnesota under Pitino when he scored 24 points in 2019 with a 5-11 shot from a 3-point range against Louisville. Kalscheur was also the team’s best defender and regularly attracted the top scorers of his opponents.
In 88 games against the Gophers, at every start he shot an average of 10.4 points, 34.5% out of the 3-point range.
